The Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi has asked parents, teachers and government to teach children the effects of greed and selfishness as a way of restraining corruption.
He made the remarks on Sunday at Bulange Mengo while delivering his Christmas massage to Ugandans.
“Our government has put up different institutions to fight corruption but all these efforts will not bear any fruits if our children are not taught to avoid greed and selfishness,” said Kabaka.
“Politeness and feeling ashamed as we perform national service is critical in a nation where civility is key but it seems our country has few people who perform national services with politeness,” he added.
Kabaka also urged government to concentrate on instilling ethics and cultural norms in Ugandans rather than putting up endless investigation bodies and committees to fight the vice. To him, the committees have proved to be ineffective.
“We are tired of that song of investigations. We need action now. We believe that if institutions were left to act independently, theft of public resources would come to an end. However corruption is not fought single handedly we all need to take action against this vice,” he urged.
Adding, “Massive corruption has led to a broken healthcare, education, political, economy and retarded national growth, if we have peace as we say, now let’s fight corruption now in a unitary manner,”
