Action Aid International Uganda has joined the regional Training Facility on Prevention and suppression of Sexual and Gender Based Violence in the great lakes region together with the UK aid in the fight against sexual gender based violence in the world.
The function that was held at Unik hotel Kireka attracted the Human Resource Development Officer for planning and quality control in Uganda Police Force Dr Kamya John who aired out some of the challenges that police is facing in the fight against Gender Based Violence.
Dr Kamya noted that one of the challenges that police is facing is adequate scientific tools to help in resolving things like the DNA.
“The DNA analysis is too expensive and is only located here in the city centre. This is a big problem which needs to be addressed through provision of more machines to the nation.” said Dr Kamya.
He went ahead to reveal that collection of evidence also lucks expertise something that has made Uganda lag behind in terms of the fight against Gender based violence.
He said that they are getting very many cases of gender based violence which up not being attended to.
“Its funny but true. You can find a woman who has reported a GBV case against the husband but when you go to arrest him,she is the very one who asks you not to imprison the husband.” Dr Kamya explained.
On the same function Henry Nikson Ogwal from Action aid said that out of the 20,000 GBV cases,10% are sexual in nature. On this note he urged more teachings against GBV to open the eyes of people.
It is estimated that 2 in 10 women in Uganda women report violence or seek help as far as research is concerned.
The Ag. Director for the Regional Training Facility on Prevention and suppression of Sexual and Gender Based Violence in the Great lakes region Mr Nathan Mwesigye Byamukama recommended the government of Uganda for establishing an enabling framework to address GBV .
He urged government to take advantage of the various stack holders in this fight.
