Uganda Police Force tribunal has today dropped charges against former Buyende District Police Commander, ASP Muhammad Kirumira after failing to gather evidence against him.
The dropped charges are torture, excessive use of authority and irregular conduct.
Police prosecutor, Katherine Kusemererwa told police court that she did not have sufficient evidence to pin Kirumira over the counts.
She said the witness, Milton Tumusiime, a journalist formerly attached to one of the local tabloids, had vowed to turn hostile if forced to testify against Kirumira because he has never had an interview with him (Kirumira).
Court chairman, Denis Odongpiny, allowed the prosecutor to withdrawal the charges saying court could not continue with the cases without witnesses.
Earlier prosecution alleged that Kirumira tortured Pius Kato and Paul Ochaya during his time as commander of Nansana police in 2014.
Kato was later killed by Police Flying Squad during an operation against armed robbery in Bweyogerere, Wakiso.
Now Kirumira has been sent to Railway Police Station until 13 February, 2018 when he will be returning to the same court for bail hearing.
Last week before being arrested, he announced through the media that he had resigned from the force.
