Fort Portal Enforcement team foiled a very late night smuggling operation recovering 12.8 tonnes of contraband sugar in a tale of intelligence and counter intelligence over the weekend.
Time check 7:00pm on Friday evening, a vigilant citizen gets in touch with the team. The citizen intimated to the team about suspicious movement at one of the landing sites on Lake Albert, Ntoroko district.
The team quickly set up on a fact finding mission of their own. Two hours later , all the information pertaining to the smuggling operation had been gathered and it was time to move in.
The smugglers were at this point transferring the goods from a boat onto a truck (UAT 938 W). The smugglers had also deployed informers who were looking out for any movements by the URA team. The team had to hide in plain sight as they went about the operation.
Two team members disguised as a boda boda rider and a female client headed out of the URA station undetected by the smugglers informers. At about 3:30am , the truck was encircled by the enforcement team and pulled to a halt.
Upon verification, 255 bags of Diamante Brazilian brown sugar were recovered. Offence management has since ensued.
