UPDF’s ‘Mission Uganda’ athletics team wins big in EAC military games and cultural events

UPDF turns second run up in men’s and women’s EAC cross-country race with two silver medals on 02 Sept 2017.

‘’Mission Uganda’’ Athletics Team won a Bronze Medal in the 11th East Africa Community Military Games and Cultural Events (EAC) taking place in the Burundian capital Bujumbura in the 10 kilometres Cross Country race for Men and Women.

UPDF’s, Cpl Cheptegei Rebeca was awarded an individual Silver Medal for taking up the second position in the women race close to Kenya’s gold medallist, CPL Mercy Njoroge. L/Cpl Chepkorom Ezekiel of UPDF was also awarded an individual silver Medal for being the second in the Men’s 10 Km Cross Country race.

“Mission Uganda” won a Bronze medal and came in the third position, Kenya in the second position with a Gold Medal, Tanzania in the first position with a Silver Medal, while Democratic Republic of Burundi lost the race.

Brig-General Nahimana Salvator, on behalf of the Burundi Chief of Defence Forces in his closing remarks congratulated the EAC Member States and organisers of the EAC games and cultural events for enabling the success of the event. ‘’the competition has brought the East African Community people closer and showed the spirit of togetherness among the participating countries through sports’’, he said.

It is the first time UPDF Mission Uganda wins a bronze Medal in the EAC games for both men and women.
