Gvernment spokesperson Ofwono Opondo has attacked the Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura on police brutality and tribalism within the security organ.
According to his article in today’s Sunday Vision, Ofwono stated that there are sticking points that Kayihura must aggressively and quickly deal with within his new term lie the ethnic imbalance in the police starting with recruitment, deployments and promotions which threatens to erode the constitutional requirement of Uganda Police Force being of a national character in composition.
The Executive Director of Uganda Media Centre further revealed that the police chief must ensure that the increasing cases and accusations of police brutality , use of excessive and unwarranted force against unarmed are eliminated.
“There are sticking points that [Uganda’s Inspector General of Police Kale] Kayihura must aggresively and quickly deal with within his new term, among them, the evident ethnic imbalance in the police starting with recruitment, deployments and promotions which threatens to erode the constitutional requirement of [Uganda Police Force] being of a national character in composition.
The second and most potent, Kayihura must ensure that increasing cases and perennial accusation of police brutality, use of excessive or unwarranted force against unarmed civilians during law enforcement especially peaceful protests is eliminated. The many invidences captured on public media when police officers clobber civiliand are a serious indictment that cannot be logically explained, let alone defended,” Ofwono noted.
