Makerere University bosses have defied the directive of the First Lady to open the university. Janet Museveni yesterday assured the university’s student leaders to resist a temptation to go for protests saying that Makerere University would be opened on Tuesday. However, the institution has remained under lock.
Makerere, like other public university haven not opened since non-teaching staff laid down their tools, demanding pay increment. The staff have refused to report to their work and the university cannot run without non teaching staff.
On Tuesday, non teaching staff and members of the University Council are to meet President Museveni to discuss the standoff that has led to the continued closure of the university.
Museveni requested to meet a 12-member team from the non-teaching staff together with University Council members at State House Entebbe.
The University, initially scheduled to open on August 6, has remained closed over an ongoing strike by the non-teaching staff who are striking over their salary enhancement and arrears. Opening dates have been deferred twice following a failed negotiated deal between government and the non-teaching staff.
