Benon Kibuuka says Maddox, Chameleone have not done enough to be called ‘legends’

Andrew Benon Kibuuka has rubbished singers Maddox Ssematimba and Joseph Mayanja aka Jose Chameleone for branding themselves ‘music legends’.

According to the Chairperson for Federation of Performing Artistes in Uganda (FPAU), none of the two artistes is even an inch within being called a legend because they have not yet worked much to earn the title.

Kibuuka’s statement follows an earlier revelation by Maddox on NTV’s Mwasuze Mutya show in which he revealed that Chameleone will not be performing at his (Madoxx) forthcoming show dubbed’ The Legend Live in Concert’, because he is not a legend.

Maddox claimed that Chameleone has not yet done enough to be called a legend and he will not be on the performers list of the night, something that Chameleone’s fans considered disrespectful.

Maddox’s concert, which is sponsored by Uganda Waragi, is slated for October 4 at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel Gardens.

To cut this verbal war short, Kibuuka has stated that Maddox isn’t a legend too, for he also has a long way to join the league of music legends.

According to Kibuuka during an interview with Livewire on Wednesday, a music legend is a person who has become an exemplary figure because of their visible positive contribution towards the industry, and both Maddox and Chameleone have not reached there.

“A person who has faded and outlived his prime years cannot be termed as a legend. It’s for people who have seen and done it all but are still role models for several people,” he said.

He noted that music legends in Uganda are artistes who include Philly Bongole Lutaaya, Elly Wamala, Moses Matovu, among others.

“Both Maddox and Chameleone are not yet legends, they are still very young and active to call themselves legends. I don’t think they have surpassed the test of time,” he noted.

Just like Maddox, Chameleone has constantly branded himself as East African legend because he has tried to remain relevant in the industry for close to two decades, mentored several artistes such as Radio and Weasel, King Saha, Papa Cidy, among others, and also released a couple of timeless songs but Kibuuka thinks that this is not enough for someone to earn the ‘legend’ title.
