President Museveni has asked German investors to open a paper making factory in Uganda. The President made the request on Wednesday while meeting German delegates at State House Entebbe to discuss issues pertaining fire brigade training, tree planting and wildlife conservation.
The delegation was led by German Ambassador Dr Albrecht Conze, whom Museveni encouraged to bring more German investors to Uganda because all conditions favouring investments in Uganda are in place is safe.
Among members of the delegation was Matthias Baldus whose firm, Global Woods Ltd, deals in tree planting and paper manufacturing.
“In Uganda, we have every condition that favours all that you need to do here. However, my first request goes to Mr Matthias. I request that on top of planting trees come and set up paper making factory so we stop importing papers,” said Museveni.
He added that no investment condition can fight development in Uganda.
According to the United Nations COMTRADE database on international trade, Uganda spends over Shs489.9bn every year on importing paper and paperboard, articles of pulp, paper and board. Among the countries that export paper and other related products to Uganda are Egypt which earns over Shs34.9bn from Uganda.
Museveni also advised Hans-Georg Hinterberger from Achelis Uganda Ltd, to help with training Uganda Police force fire department on modern approaches to fight fire and how to handle the task generally.
The investors also presented their 10-year report on what they have been doing in Uganda and Museveni welcomed it and urged them to continue working with Ugandan.
“I was happy with the 10-year report from Albrecht Furst Zu Oettingen of Spielberg, about conservation progress in Pian Upe game reserve in Karamoja. Albrecht says the number of animals has increased because people now understand the importance of conservation as opposed to poaching,” said Museveni.
