Do you remember Lulu Jemimah, the young woman who made international headlines in 2018 after marrying herself?
With struggles of looking for tuition, she also had had enough with her family who couldn’t stop asking when she’s getting married and have children.
She decided to get her parents off her back by getting married and committed to herself, so that she can still pursue her Oxford dreams of being a Creative Writer.
Well, Lulu’s whole marriage story will be for another day. But latest from the 32-year-old Oxford University student is that she will be speaking at the Uganda International Writers Conference that will take place in Kampala from May 15 to 17, 2019.
Lulu is interested in story telling across mediums with a background as a freelance journalist in Uganda for six years, and in Rwanda for one year. She has also worked as a communication consultant for the International Organisation for Migration where she was responsible for highlighting challenges of domestic and international human trafficking.
In UK she is experimented with writing scripts for radio, the screen and the stage under the guidance of a documentary film maker.
In 2013, she received a BA Media (film) scholarship from Macquarie University in Australia and was shortlisted for the 2015 Monash Undergraduate Prize for Creative Writing.
She is working on a feature radio drama documentary about the disappearance of a two-year-old boy in Fort Portal back in 1969.
About Uganda International Writers Conference
The Uganda International Writers Conference was started in 2013 as a biennial international platform for writers and publishing professionals to converge for a week’s debate of intellectual stimulation and thought-provoking discussions. Since then it has hosted such literary luminaries as Bibi Bakare-Yusuf and Lemn Sissay in 2017 as well as Noo Saro-Wiwa, Chinelo Okparanta, Julianne Okot Bitek and a host of others in 2015.
