Business has resumed at Makerere University almost a month after lecturers went on strike.
The strike, that started at the on the first day of the semester was a result of the suspension of the Muasa chairperson, Dr Deus Kamunyu, and his general secretary, Mr Joseph Kalema.
The deal to stop the strike follows an emergency meeting last week by the University Council. In a statement signed by Lorna Magara, the chairperson of the Council, it was agreed that ‘the scheduled university activities return to full normalcy with immediate effect,’ and that ‘engagements with all stakeholders shall continue for improving stakeholder relations at the university.’
On Monday however, Makerere University manager of communications and public relations, lectures are ongoing.
“Students are attending lectures, lecturers have also conducting lectures. Everything is normal and it is business as usual,” he said.
In related news, university management decided that there will be no surcharges for this semester following the strike.
“The University Bursar i informs all students that following the delays that have happened since the beginning of semester II 2018/19, there will be no surcharges,” the university tweeted on Monday. “This is a temporary and not a permanent directive!”
The deadline for payment of tuition at the university is usually the sixth week of a semester. However, there is a surcharge on late payment as fixed by Council and usually Shs20,000.
