Asaph Mwebaze: Nyamityobora players let me down

Western side Nyamityobora Football Club’s first season in the top flight seems to be continuing on its downward spiral with the latest development that head coach Asaph Mwebaze together with his assistants have quit the club hours after their 2-0 home loss to Express FC.

The soft spoken tactician who joined the club barely three months ago, replaced James Odoch who also resigned from the role in November citing mismanagement, negligence and lack of respect by the club’s top officials.

Club chairman Ben Misagga then claimed Odoch had left because of poor results.

Misagga promised that Nyamityobora would name a coach who was able to save the club from the drop and they believed Mwebaze was that man. But according to the club’s manager, Juma Ssekiziyivu, a failure to turn around results at the club influenced the coaches’ decision.

“Yes. It is true that the head coach (Mwebaze) and his assistants have resigned because of the poor run of results at the club. At the moment, we have no one in charge and soon the club management will convene to seek a way forward,” said Ssekiziyivu.

Mwebaze has managed 11 games with the Abanyakare, winning only two games against fellow strugglers Ndejje University and  by the famous 4-1 victory over Police FC at Lugogo. Mwebaze further managed just two draws and lost seven games.

But speaking after the game, Mwebaze looked distraught and disappointed in the lack of fight, effort and determination exhibited by his players plus the failure to put his tactics into plan said he felt like he could not do any more for the club and players as he feels they have let him down.

“I feel I cannot do anymore, I have given these players the best there is, but it seems they have failed to grasp the opportunity. They have let me down,” Mwebaze said after the game.

Other sources have also claimed that Mwebaze’s resignation was because of intrigue, factions within the players and in-fighting within the club. The source also confirmed that some Nyamityobora players were spotted in Rukare which is far from Mbarara barely three hours from kickoff.

At the start of the season, Mwebaze was named head coach at Onduparaka after he left Maroons FC. But he left three months into the job after eight games also citing tribalism and disrespect. He leaves Nyamityobora 15th on the 16 team log, with 12 points from 19 games.
