American Major League Soccer side, Sporting Kansas City has signed Rwandan International defender, Abdul Rwatubyaye.
The center back has signed a four-year pending International Transfer Certificate from The Rwanda Football Federation (Ferwafa) and visa application.
Rwatubyaye joins Sporting KC after three seasons with Rayon Sports FC. He joined Rayon from archrivals, Military side, APR.
The 22-year old defender has won three Rwanda Premier League titles and featured 22 times Amavubi, including appearances in FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Rwatubyaye spent his earlier years at Vision Sports Academy before signing for Isonga FC( Feeder club for U-23) in 2013.
A strong showing with the club prompted his APR to seek his service, where he won two consecutive Rwanda Premier League titles as a regular starter. Rwatubyaye tallied three goals and an assist in 21 games during the 2014-15 campaign, which culminated in a league championship and a berth in the 2016 CAF Champions League, Africa’s premier club competition.
He is best remember for his heart trick against Mbabane Swallows in APR’s 4-1 second-leg victory over which the military side won 4-2 on aggregate.
After leading APR to another league title in 2015-16, Rwatubyaye sealed a move to archrival Rayon Sports.
In his first season with the team, he scored four goals in 22 matches and lifted his third straight Premier League trophy. In the 2018 season, Rwatubyaye and Rayon Sports reached the quarterfinals of the Caf Confederation Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. For the national team, Rwatubyaye has represented Rwanda at the U-17, U-20, U-23 and senior levels.
Rwatubyaye has started each of Rwanda’s four matches during 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, most recently helping the Wasps earn draws against Guinea and Central African Republic.
