Soon Ugandans may start paying taxes for using social media platforms such as Facebook, Whatsapp, twitter among others.
In his letter dated 12th March, 2018, President Yoweri Museveni tasked Finance Minister Matia Kasaija to find way of taxing excise duty on airtime.
“Why dont you tax voice conversations and other non educative communications over the internet via social media e.g, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Whatsapp etc?” He asked.
”Olugambo o social media (opinions, prejudice, insults, friendly chats) together with advertisements like those on Google must pay taxes because we need resources to cope with the constituencies of their Lugambo” he added
”We cannot continue borrowing money or depend on donation and grants to run government programs because of your unseriousness in taxation” he fumed.
