Ugandan opposition leader, Bobi Wine, has praised the United States for imposing sanctions on four senior Ugandan police officers accused of human rights violations. The officers, Bob Kagarura, Elly Womanya, Alex Mwine, and Hamdan Twesigye, are reportedly involved in the torture and mistreatment of Ugandans, especially those who do not support the government.
In a statement, Bobi Wine expressed delight at the sanctions, saying they were long overdue. He pointed out that these officers have been accused of cruel, degrading, and inhumane treatment. One of the key incidents cited was the torture of Member of Parliament Francis Zaake, which was confirmed by the High Court of Uganda. Despite the evidence against them, the Ugandan government allegedly shielded these officers, even promoting them.
Bobi Wine emphasized that the sanctions are a strong message that justice, though delayed, will eventually be served. He also warned other security officers, at all levels, that they will be held personally responsible for any crimes they commit against Ugandan citizens.
The opposition leader thanked the U.S. government for consistently listening to the pleas of Ugandans and for taking action against individuals who violate human rights with impunity, despite the lack of accountability from Uganda’s own institutions.
