The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) has confirmed the arrest of Sgt. Minani Gervais, a 39-year-old soldier, following a tragic incident in which he allegedly fatally shot five civilians in a bar in Rusharara Cell, Karambi Sector, Nyamasheke District. The incident occurred in the early hours of November 13, 2024, and has left the nation in shock and mourning.

In a statement issued from Kigali, the RDF expressed profound regret over the tragic events, pledging that necessary legal action will be pursued to ensure justice is served. “The RDF extends its deepest condolences to the grieving families and friends of the victims,” the statement read, acknowledging the devastating impact of the loss on the affected families and the community.

While details surrounding the motive for the shooting remain unclear, the RDF’s swift arrest of the suspect underscores its commitment to addressing the situation with full accountability. Authorities have begun an investigation to uncover the circumstances leading to the fatal shooting, which has drawn widespread calls for justice and reassurance of safety from the public.

This tragedy has reignited conversations about security and the conduct of military personnel, with many looking to the RDF for a thorough and transparent handling of the case. The armed forces have promised to keep the public informed as more details emerge from the investigation.

The RDF has called for calm as it continues its inquiry, reiterating its commitment to upholding the law and maintaining the safety and trust of citizens throughout Rwanda.
