The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has called on African leaders to unite in defending the foundation of the family, which she says is the cornerstone of societal values. According to Among, these values are increasingly under threat from issues such as domestic violence and homosexuality. She emphasized the need for strong action to protect the integrity of families across the continent.
Speaking during the 9th Women’s Forum, an event organized by Parliament in the lead-up to Uganda’s National Independence Day celebrations on October 9th, Speaker Among commended the efforts of the 11th Parliament in passing laws designed to uphold family values. Among the key pieces of legislation she highlighted were the Succession Act and the Anti-Homosexuality Act, both of which aim to safeguard the institution of the family.
In her speech, Among also expressed her appreciation to President Yoweri Museveni for his commitment to promoting women in leadership positions. She acknowledged the president’s decision to appoint women to top roles in government, including Vice President Jesca Alupo, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, and Inspector General of Government (IGG) Betty Kamya. Among also noted her own position as Speaker, underscoring the president’s trust in women’s leadership abilities.
“I thank the president for appointing women in high positions. The Speaker is a woman, the Prime Minister is a woman, the Vice President is a woman, the IGG is a woman, cabinet ministers are women—everybody is a woman,” she said, vowing that the women in these leadership roles would not disappoint.
The 9th Women’s Forum brought together women leaders and participants from across the country to discuss issues affecting women and families in Uganda, focusing on strategies to strengthen the role of women in leadership and safeguard traditional values in the face of modern challenges.
