Police in Rukungiri are investigating circumstances surrounding the murder of 16-year-old Erias Ahereza, a resident of Nyakagyera cell, Burora parish, Nyarushanje Sub-county, Rukungiri district.
The teenager was allegedly tortured and murdered by his step-mother, Ninsiima Regisi, who assaulted and locked him in a room for a week. The incident came to light on August 19, 2024, when a neighbor informed the area chairperson, Aston Mutabazi, about the boy’s condition.
Mutabazi intervened and rushed the boy to Kebisoni Health Centre, which later referred him to Kisiizi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on August 20, 2024, at around 1700hrs.
The police have arrested the suspect and are holding her at Kiyenje Police Station. The crime scene has been examined and documented, and the body has been taken to Rwakabengo HC III mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Inquiries are ongoing to establish the likely motive behind the child’s torture and murder. ASP Elly Maate, PRO Kigezi, confirmed the incident and urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
