The Territorial Police in Greater Masaka, have in custody, a Liberian National and an accomplice, who were arrested for staging a fake kidnap.
The matter had been reported to police, by Walter Chatora, a 54 year old male and National Mission President.
“The Church of Jesus Christ, indicating how, Taulus Zanto, a 20 year old, male adult, of Liberian origin, working as a Missionary volunteer, in Nyendo, Masaka district, had been kidnapped by unknown persons from his residence on the January 2, 2020 at around 11pm. Eventually, the alleged kidnappers started demanding for a ransom of USD20,000 for his release, lest he would get killed,” says Police spokesperson Fred Enanga.
Enanga says after reporting the case, they created a task team which located the victim at a hideout in Nyendo Masaka district.
“It was established that the kidnap story was fake. It was a plot to get quick money. He had conspired with an accomplice Makumbi John, a former workmate, who was actually pretending to be his abductor and was using a phone to demand for ransom,” the Police mouthpiece reveals.
“We are launching an awareness campaign to fight this vice of extortion, where criminals lie about kidnapping a loved one and then demand for money. The suspects are being charged with conspiracy, giving false information and demanding by menaces.”
