List: Makerere University suspends nine, warns 26 others for participating in strike

Nine Makerere University students have been suspended, almost 10 days into an ongoing strike at the institution.

The strike broke out last Tuesday after the university management decided to increase tuition by 15 per cent.

On Thursday last week, military personnel stormed halls of residence, clobbering students – male and female – before destroying their property.

This prompted President Museveni, on Monday, to order the army to vacate the university premises.

Also, calls for dialogue between the university management and student leaders have not been answered.

“In light of the recent student unrests and protests against the fees policy, Management has taken disciplinary action against some students. Affected students are requested to collect their letters from the office of the Dean of students,” a notice from the university said.

Those supended include Mollie Saasiraabo Siperia from the School of Psychology who is bedridden after she was attacked a day after leading the strike on Tuesday.  She reportedly received her letter while in police detention.
