Greenhill Academy celebrates 25 years of providing holistic education

Lorna Nassuna, a product controller at JP Morgan Chase in London and one of the former students at Greenhill Academy says that the school laid the foundation for her to become an executive of one of the world’s biggest investment banks. “I was at Greenhill between 2000 and 2001 and I loved the fact that Greenhill really pushed me academically and seeing where I am today, I can say that the school did indeed extend my horizons,” she says in an email interview from London as Greenhill marks 25 years this April.

Nassuna is not the only one to sing praise of the school that has made a significant contribution to the education sector in Uganda. The Minister of Education and Sports and First Lady as well as a former parent of Greenhill, Hon.Janet Kataha Museveni, has commended Greenhill Academy for maintaining good academic standards and the strong morals and ethical values the school was founded on.

The minister made her remarks in a message sent to Greenhill Academy management ahead of its sliver jubilee celebrations. “I take this opportunity to congratulate Greenhill Academy and join them in their celebration of 25 years not only of existence, but also of steady growth. As it happens, I am one of the parents who witnessed the beginnings of the Academy and was personally acquainted with its founders,” she said.

Greenhill Academy will celebrate its 25th anniversary with an open day event at the Kibuli campus on Tuesday April 30, 2019. The Minister of State for Primary Education, Hon. Rosemary Sseninde  is expected to preside over the event as the Guest of Honor.

Greenhill Academy, which has both primary and secondary sections at Kibuli and another primary section in Buwaate in Wakiso was founded in 1994 by two educationist siblings Gladys Nsibirwa Wambuzi and Janet Nsibirwa Mdoe, who are now both deceased. From its humble beginnings, Greenhill is now one of the biggest schools in the country not just in numbers and academics but in many fields as well. Greenhill students regularly top swimming competitions among other games and its alumni occupy key positions across the world.

Joy Veronica Maraka, the Rector of Greenhill Academy recalls the beginnings of the schools “In the early days, most parents had given Greenhill a chance basing solely on the reputation of Mrs. Wambuzi and Mrs. Mdoe. Now, with Mrs. Wambuzi’s demise, parents were asking me, “since she has passed on, what school do you recommend for our children?” I always said Number one, Greenhill; number 2, Greenhill and number 3, Greenhill,” she recalls.

She added that Greenhill’s remarkable growth has taken more than words. “We had to intensify our efforts to prove that we could go on,” she added before inviting parents, the alumni, and the general public to attend the celebrations. “I invite all of you to join us on Tuesday April 30, 2019 at Kibuli so that our children can demonstrate the holistic education they get here and celebrate with us this achievement,” she added.

The open day will include exhibitions by students and pupils demonstrating skills acquired over the years from ICT to Science, Art, Sports, Music, Dance and Drama.
