A 29-year-old Customer Services Specialist with Barclays Bank, Ndeba branch has been arrested for allegedly stealing $50,000 (Shs187million) from an account belonging to businessman Charles Mbire.

Mbire, MTN Uganda Chairman, was unavailable for a comment.

According to reports reaching our desk, Naishibah Naiga is being detained at Katwe Police Station. A police complaint vide CRB469/2019 has already been lodged at the police station.

The accused allegedly conspired with some colleagues from the bank’s IT department to steal the money.

When quizzed by auditors investigating the usual transaction of such large sums, Naiga could barely make any sensible response, thus leading to her arrest this week.

Last month, two private security guards and a civilian were arrested after thugs attempted to rob the bank’s Nakulabye branch.
Robbers attempted to gain access to the bank by cutting a window but were reportedly denied by burglar proofs, a local daily reported.

Sources allegedly said two thugs shattered the glass window, and entered the bank and vanished with bags containing unspecified items.

The bank’s communications department and the police are yet to comment on both matters.
