A university medicine student has been hacked to death.

Ivy Wangechi, a final year medical student in the College of Health Sciences, Moi University, was attacked and killed in broad daylight outside the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, on Tuesday April 9.

She was waylaid by an axe-wielding man identified as Naftali Njahi Kinuthia, as she was returning to her hostel after a day’s shift in the wards.

Kinuthia, who is said to be an employee of a Nairobi-based betting firm, pulled an axe out of a sack and hit her on the head.

The suspect is said to have travelled all the way from Thika to commit the heinous crime that shocked the country.

The attacker who is alleged to be Wangechi’s boyfriend tried to escape after committing the atrocity.

He was however caught by boda boda operators and set on fire. The attacker sustained serious burn injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at the MTRH.

Moi University VC Isaac Kosgei confirmed the incident and said that Ivy died after she was rushed to the MTRH.

Motive of the attacker is yet to be established.
