Ntungamo District leaders have embarked on a campaign to sensitize the populace and other district stakeholders to support the splitting of Ntungamo district into three for better service delivery.

According to a source, NRM leaders, including area Members of Parliament led by Rushenyi county MP Mwesigwa Rukutana met the First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni at her country home in Ruhaama county on January 9 and presented the frame work paper to have Ntungamo district split into three districts of Ntungamo Rushenyi and Kajara. Rukutana is the Deputy Attorney General while Mrs Museveni doubles as district NRM chairperson.

Upon receiving of the 13-page document, Mrs Museveni promised to present it to the President for the consideration.

The meeting with the First Lady follows an earlier on held in the district headed by Rukutana on December 30, 2018.

Then, the district political leaders unanimously supported the splitting of the district and agreed to meet the President Museveni saying that he is the one who had opposed it earlier.

In August 2017, Ntungamo district council unanimously passed the resolution to create Ntungamo-Ruhaama, Kajara and Rushenyi districts to bring services nearer to the people.

The district chairperson Denis Singahache had strongly appealed to all political leaders to advocate for unity even though they are agitating for splitting Ntungamo.

Ntungamo district was created in 1993 with three counties. Currently, it has a population of 550,000, 11 town councils and 19 sub-counties.
