Police have in custody four suspected criminals who have been circulating threatening letters demanding for money from business people in Kampala Metropolitan area.
Their arrest last week came after a joint security operation that led to the apprehension of two panga wielding thugs who attacked and injured Indian investors at a metal fabrication factory at Kabembe, Mukono. They robbed Shs100 million and other valuables in the process.
The suspects allegedly belong to a criminal group known as ‘People’s Agency’ which is led by a one John Mwanje alias Brandon/Brian.
Recently, Police Deputy Spokesperson Patrick Onyango revealed that the letters carried intimidating messages demanding for payment of money in foreign currencies ranging from USD 30,000 (over Shs111m) to USD 45,000 (over Shs130m) which was supposed to be paid within three months as contribution towards the activities of the criminal gang. Payment was supposed to be made through Bitcoin Crypto Currency.
Meanwhile, police have issued a reward of Shs20 million to anybody who can provide useful information leading to the arrest of Mwanje.
Mwanje is suspected to be the mastermind of major robberies in and around Kampala. He is believed to be armed and dangerous.
