Robert Kanusu is a former UPC Chairperson in Jinja district and on Tuesday he declared crossing to NRM at a rally in Jinja.
Sources close to Kanusu say he was doing badly financially and Justine Lumumba Kasule, NRM secretary general gave him a million shillings to beat up the dust on his feet.
Lumumba introduced Kanusu to President Yoweri Museveni at a final rally for Nathan Nabeta on Tuesday at Fairland University. Nabeta will tomorrow face off at the ballot box with FDC man Paul Mwiru who also completed his rally at a mammoth crowd in Jinja town.
“As you work with the opposition at the National level, we have also been working with several non NRM members in these campaigns “, said the SG before inviting Kanusu for a presidential hand shake amidst wild cheers from the mammoth crowd.
At the end of his address, the National Chairperson invited Kanusu to speak to the gathering and he publicly confessed joining the ruling party.
“I have made up my mind to join NRM and I am ready to work for it and for my country as an NRM person”, he said.
Kanusu was Go-Forward coordinator for the entire Eastern Region in the 2016 General Elections.
He had contested unsuccessfully two times for the LCV seat and once served as Press Secretary to then UPC President Prof. Olala Otunu.
President Museveni welcomed Kanusu and others to NRM and called upon the party members to work with them harmoniously.
Lumumba who is said to have fished Kanusu for a few millions of shillings said such operations will continue country-wide to broaden the party membership.
