NWSC completes shs12billion Kapeeka water supply system

The National Water and Sewerage Corporation has completed the construction of a new water treatment plant in Kapeeka, Nakaseke District.
The plant with a capacity to supply 3.5 million litres of water per day is in support of the Government’s efforts to provide safe water for human consumption and economic development.

The project encompasses a water intake, water treatment plant, storage reservoirs and associated transmission and distribution pipelines. The project will provide safe water to the communities of Koona Kilak, Kyelerezi, Singo Army Barracks, Kapeeka Town, the proposed Industrial Park in Kapeeka. The project also has a provision for future extensions to Semuto Town and Nakaseke District headquarters.

Speaking during the tour of the system, NWSC MD Dr.Eng Silver Mugisha shared that the project is a big milestone for the corporation. ” The system was designed by our own engineers which signifies the capacity we are developing to build water systems in Uganda. The project which cost 12billion was built using internally generated funds. We’re working day and night to extend safe water in all corners of the country.”

NWSC Board chairman Dr.Eng Christopher Ebal explained that the works are in line with the corporation’s 5 year strategic direction. He added that the corporation is working on a number of projects in Kumi, Ngora, Arua,Gulu,Kapchorwa, Bushenyi,Masaka,Isingiro, Kaabong among many others to improve the lives of the people of Uganda.

Following the completion of the water system, a number of interventions have been achieved that include:

• Tertiary Mains extensions (completed) – 1.1km to Naluvule and 2.2km to Singo barracks

• Network intensifications – 1.0km

• New connections – 15no. in March 2017 to 165no. as of 20th October 2017

• New Public Stand Posts – 12no.

• Surveys for pipeline extension to Semuto (10km) completed. Pipes already secured, and excavation to commence next week

• Surveys for pipeline extension to Bukomero (20km) recently completed. Material requirements currently being prepared

• Planned extensions include; Namirembe (3.5-4km), Milambwa (2.0 km), and Kalagara (2.5km)
