Police have banned singer turned politician Bobi Wine from performing at a music show which is supposed to take place at Coline Hotel in Mukono.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander Frank Mwesigwa, the Kyadondo East MP last Sunday uttered words that were inciting the public during his music show at One Love Beach in Busabala.
Mwesigwa says the popular though new legislator is now under investigation and therefore has been barred from performing at the show in question.
Music promoter Balunywa of Balunywa Promotions had earlier informed police that he would be organizing a music show in Mukono where the legislator was the main performer. He intended to ask for security for the event.
However, Police has notified him that, “Unfortunately we are not granting permission for the show because during the previous show at One Love Beach Busabala he uttered words that are incitful to the public and he is now under investigations,” said Mwesigwa.
If the police don’t withdraw its ban, Bobi Wine will be the first musicians in Uganda to be stopped from performing music owing to his political views.
The musician, who branded himself as the “president of the ghetto” has become a concern for the political class in the ruling party since he swept the Kyadondo East parliamentary seat. He has since attracted political jabs from President Museveni in the media meaning he could be seen as a political threat to the establishment.
Bobi Wine cut his teeth as a musician with roots from one of the worst slums of Kampala, Kamokya. He has a huge following among young people, across Uganda, who believe he speaks out their concerns in the language they understand best.
