The Uganda Police Force on Tuesday 3rd October 2017, commemorated the Police-Day at Nkumba University in Entebbe Wakiso district under the theme: Connecting with communities to fight crime.
Representing the His Excellency president of Uganda, the Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, appreciated the police for being more pro-people which have made them be more proactive in their profession which has ensured a crime free society.
“Connecting with communities to fight crime is the right approach in this new error of criminality. Uganda Police Force has made significant strides in the protection of life; security of property. The government is committed to support the Uganda police force in its drive to professionalizing the force, for it to reach their objectives”. Said the Vice President
On the other hand,the Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura promised to do what it takes to stop the murders in areas of Wakiso.
“Having the police celebrations held in Katabi, it is to show our solidarity which energizes us so as to work hand in hand to cease the murders in the area”. Said the IGP
Kayihura re-assured the public of the new security measures that are expected to end the craze of killing women. He said he was currently working on strengthening neighborhood watch, as well as increasing deployment in the area.
“We have increased on the number of policemen in Katabi on foot patrol, motorcycles and patrol cars. They will be coordinating with crime preventers and LC chairpersons to monitor security right from the grass root level,” he said.
Police is also to introduce other forms of patrols like roller skaters, bicycles and call centers in each ward in Katabi, where people will be given specific telephone numbers to report all forms of crimes.
Gen. Kayihura further called upon the police officers and other security agencies to serve the people. “This confidence the people have in us, let it be a challenge” He added
In 2014 while the police centenary celebrations, the president commemorated 3rd October as police day and also launched the concept of community policing. As part of the celebrations, the different police directorates, departments and units have demonstrated their different capabilities to the public.
The police day has been preceded by the police week packed with free health service to the public, community policing marathon in Nasana, a public lecture at Nkumba university, and exhibitions of different directorates and departments country-wide all working at appreciating and strengthening the police relationship with the publics.
