State Minister for Works Gen Katumba Wamala on Monday morning surprised his critics when he visited Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake who is hospitalized at Lubaga hospital.
The former chief of defence forces said he had to settle the dust after allegations over the weekend that he had ruthlessly punched the youthful MP, young enough to be his son, during last Wednesday’s fracas at parliament over the lifting of the controversial age limit clause in the constitution.
Security personnel said to be Special Forces forcefully dragged the suspended legislators from the August House, but not before Zaake went down unconscious from what he says was a punch from the former military chief.
During the hospital visit, Gen. Katumba revealed that he had decided to visit Zaake to mend fences after the public criticized him for beating up the youthful legislator. Zaake himself took on Gen Wamala, regretting why he had always held him with high esteem.
“I have visited Zaake to show him that I have no problem with him regardless of what happened last week,” the general said.
Zaake said he has been humbled by the gesture from the general to come down to see him in the hospital.
“I have forgiven him,” said Zaake who adds that he doesn’t regret throwing chairs at the security officers at parliament. He said he would do the same thing if he found in the same circumstances again.
Zaake said he has a moral and legal obligation. “It is my duty to defend the constitution.”
The Mityana Municipality is among the 25 MPs who were suspended by Speaker Kadaga for three sittings over misconduct during the plenary session.
Meanwhile, during an interview with NBS TV on Sunday, Katumba denied ever punching the youthful MP regardless of the photo and video evidence making rounds on social media.
