Kampala Metropolitan Police commander CP. Mwesigwa Frank on Tuesday revealed that police is in final plans to train local communities in taekwondo to enable them defend themselves in case of any attack from thugs.
He said this while meeting lookout teams and local leaders of Katwe Police Division.
He requested local leaders to organize willing residents for free taekwondo lessons courtesy of police.
He also pointed out the willingness of police in bringing government programs closer like Operation Wealth Creation(OWC) to communities affected by crimes and also the lookout teams supporting police in preventing crime.
Mwesigwa further thanked the lookout teams attached to Nyanama area for their swiftness, commitment in identifying and providing police with reliable intelligence on the arrested murder suspect.
As he launched and sensitized about the “Mayumba Kumi” concept,he stressed that compared to the 1971 Mayumba Kumi system in Tanzania, Uganda police has chosen to rebrand/rebuild a stronger security system based on a 10+4 concept where out of the 10 households, 4 people are chosen as members of the lookout teams. These lookout teams are based on discipline, feeling of responsibility, willingness to work with police, patriotism and having police at heart.
Mwesigwa also directed OCs to sensitise people about the mayumba kumi concept apart from registering them.
