Government is to meet the late former Minister Jehoash Mayanja Nkangi’s medical bills and all expenses for burial arrangements.
Speaking at requiem service at Namirembe Cathedral yesterday, the Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi said that no amount of words of consolation can be sufficient to rid the sorrow and emptiness created by Mayanja Nkangi’s departure.
He said that Government recognizes the contribution Mayanja Nkangi has made to the development of Uganda and as a former Minister and Member of Parliament, will be accorded an official burial to alleviate the family of the strain.
Ssekandi described Nkangi as an exemplary icon, who servedwholeheartedly his Country in various key capacities for over five decades distinguishing himself as Nationalist, Public Servant and Politician.
He said that the late Nkangi exhibited high level of patriotism and selflessness becoming an inspiration for many in the service of Uganda in his long service to humanity in the country’s independence, development, unity, peace and constitutionalism.
Ssekandi said that Uganda has, lost a true servant who craved to contribute to the development of his Country in a humble manner and with the zeal of wishing every person the best in both Official and Private Capacities.
Nkangi was one of the pioneer graduates of Makerere University with Bachelor of mathematics and economics in 1954 before joining the British Oxford University, where he graduated with a Masters Degree in Economics and Public Finance in 1957.
He also enrolled for a law degree from the London Lincoln Inn of Courts in 1959 and on retuning to Uganda, joined UPC Government Minister of Commerce and later the Katikiro of Buganda until 1966.
Nkangi who was the founder President of the Conservative Party, joined the NRM Government in 1986 and served in the Ministries of Education, Planning and Economic Development, Finance, Justice and Constitutional Affairsand lastly Chairman Land commission.
He passed away on March 6 at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala where he had been earlier admitted.
