On Wednesday during a plenary meeting at Parliament, the Minister in charge of Kampala, Beti Kamya surprised many MPs when she asked for a ‘golden handshake’ from Parliament following the ruthless eviction of over 1,5000 vendors from Park Yard Market on Monday.
While presenting a ministerial statement in Parliament on
, Kamya tactfully refused to read out the part that asks Parliament to reward her for her actions but Kasilo MP, Elijah Okupa, put her on a point of order and read out the part she had skipped.
“It is a resounding mission for which Parliament deserves
to give me a handshake,” the statement read.
When Speaker,Rebecca Kadaga asked her to clarify whether she was actually asking for a ‘golden handshake’, Kamya adamantly said yes.
Kamya further defended her action saying the parkyard market land has been illegally
occupied by the vendors in the premises citing that the land
is owned by a board of trustees, and it a 20 year old story
by owners trying to get back their land.
“Parkyard market land is owned by a board of trustees, and
it a 20 year old story by owners trying to get back their
land,” Kamya stated.
The minister said the evicted vendors have been relocated to Ham Shopping mall and Wandegeya market.
On Monday Parkyard market was demolished by unidentified men following the minister’s directive ordering vendors at the Park Yard market to vacate citing that the market was existing on the land in question illegally.
