The recent annual general meeting of the Uganda Performing Rights Society turned out to be another side show as big stars stayed away from the function held at Satellite hotel in Kisasi.
The big stars insist UPRS lacks transparency and they will not be apart of it until it starts to do things more openly and involve them more that is why they formed the rival Uganda Musicians Association which is promising heaven on earth.
Well that did not stop the elections and deliberations from taking place with Dr. Tee real names Travis Kazibwe replacing Moses Matovu as new UPRS Chairman, Joanita Kawalya being named Vice Chairperson and others like Chance Nalubega becoming the women’s representative on the commitee with Producer, song writer and singer Branic Benz being representative of artistes from central region.
James Wasula one of the founder members of UPRS retained his position as CEO although he was replaced as the organisation’s secretary. And in defence of UPRS, Wasula says before it was formed, there was no organisation collecting royalties for artistes so the artistes should be proud of the little they are getting because they were getting nothing before.
Travis Kazibwe added that artistes should first become part of UPRS and then start demanding improvement and better services but making noise from outside won’t help.
