Uganda Little Hands Go Green, NEMA move to end plastic pollution ahead of World Environment Day

Uganda Little Hands Go Green has on Friday officially launched the World Environment Day celebrations with a mini caravan that aims at educating people especially the young ones about the dangers of plastic bags (Kavera) and how they can put an end on plastic pollution.

The event took place at Palace Junior School in Kireka and it was graced by officials from National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Deputy Executive Director, Ms. Christine Akello who urged pupils to get rid of plastic bags which pose a great danger to the environment.

Uganda Little Hands Go Green Chief Executive Officer Mr. Joseph Masembe said they opted to launch their caravan from Kireka because the area has a lot of dumping of plastic wastes and it would directly show children the plight of what the country like Uganda is facing.

He also called upon all children to become the ambassadors of the ‘Kavera’ free Uganda message.

Paula Marie, one of the Little Hands Go Green Ambassadors revealed that have started mini caravan from school because they want the children to know that the future is in their hands and they should protect environment for a better tomorrow.

At the same event, Dr. Daniel Babikwa, a Director at NEMA educated children some of the dangers of plastic bags to people as well as to the environment.

He said when smoked in the air, plastic bags can cause chronic diseases such as cancer and Tuberculosis.

For those who use them for cooking, Dr. Babikwa said plastic bags contaminate food which also leads to several diseases.

He however, advised children to always persuade people to use other alternatives which are friendly to the environment.

Meanwhile, the official World Environment Day celebrations are scheduled to take place on 5^TH June in Mbale.
