KAMPALA – Uganda’s sports journalism fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the death of veteran analyst and columnist Allan Ssekamatte, who passed away at Kiruddu Hospital.
News of his death was confirmed by longtime colleague and friend Mark Ssali, who paid tribute in an emotional message shared on social media. “Dear friends, our beloved Allan Ssekamatte has passed on at Kiruddu Hospital. So long my brother, may God take charge,” Ssali wrote, capturing the shock and grief felt across the industry.
For decades, Ssekamatte was a defining voice in Uganda’s sports media landscape. He built a formidable reputation through his sharp, fearless columns in the Daily Monitor, where his analysis, particularly of football, became required reading for fans every week. His writing style—bold, witty, and uncompromising—set him apart as one of the country’s most respected sports commentators.
Beyond print, Ssekamatte was a familiar face on television. He was a key figure on the popular sports show 442, where he formed a memorable trio alongside Mark Ssali and Joseph Kabuleta. The chemistry between the three turned the programme into a fan favourite, blending deep analysis with lively debate that helped shape public conversation around sports in Uganda.
Listeners also remember him from Monitor FM, where his voice carried the same authority and passion that defined his writing. Whether on radio, television, or in print, Ssekamatte brought a rare mix of intellect and authenticity that resonated with audiences across generations.
Fans and colleagues have since taken to social media to share memories of his impact. Many recall growing up eagerly turning to the back pages of newspapers just to read his columns, while others remember the excitement of watching him dissect football matters on television. His passion for Chelsea FC was well known, often adding a personal touch to his commentary.
As tributes continue to pour in, Ssekamatte is being remembered not just as a journalist, but as a mentor, entertainer, and pioneer who elevated sports journalism in Uganda. His voice, which once commanded attention across multiple platforms, may have fallen silent—but his influence will endure.
Details regarding the cause of death and funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
