Kampala Capital City Authority on Wednesday handed over new infrastructure worth Shs6.9bn to Makerere University.
The project came as a compensation grant to Makerere University due to its 1.7 acres of land that was taken up during the construction of Makerere Hill road which stretched from Wandegeya to Sir Apollo Kaggwa. During this construction in 2015, Makerere University lost it main gate, since there was need to expand the road.
The new infrastructural project include; nine reconstructed roads, refurbished University Hospital, a new 3-storied Administration Block at Makerere Collage School, beautiful walkways, street lights and a refurbished main entrance.
Speaking at the handover ceremony at Makerere University campus, KCCA boss Jennifer Musisi appreciated the cooperation of World Bank which funded the project and also welcomed the cooperation of the University authority.
“I thank MUK, World bank and the executive government for the cooperation they gave in to see that we make MUK look better than before. During the breaking of the former main entrance gate, a lot of people threatened to arrest me as was the case during the rebuilding of Wandegeya Market but now MUK has the most beautiful gate allover East Africa,” said Musisi.
Makerere University boss professor Barnabas Nawangwe thanked KCCA for the new infrastructure.
“The new infrastructure project added a more beautiful appearance to the university. With the financial problems we have, we would not have managed this but we thank KCCA and World Bank for this look of the University. In the past thugs used to terrorize our students because we had dark places in the University but now it bright allover be it night or day,” said Nawangwe.
This project started in October 2015 and is yet to be finished, according to Nawangwe. The whole compensation fund is Shs8bn.
