The umbrella body for Uganda’s private tourism sector has officially rebranded, changing its name from the Confederation of Uganda Tourism Associations (COUTA) to the Uganda Tourism Association (UTA), in a move aimed at strengthening the industry’s brand and voice.
The announcement was formalized on Tuesday, September 9, following the issuance of a certificate by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau, marking the completion of a lengthy legal process.
UTA Vice President, Isa Kato, said the new identity will simplify engagement with members, government agencies, and international partners.
“The new name is more modern and directly reflects our role as the unifying voice for Uganda’s tourism sector,” he said. “This is not just a change in name; it’s a renewed commitment to professionalism, accountability, and collaboration as we work to reposition the industry for growth.”
Representing more than 2,500 enterprises—including tour operators, hotel owners, and safari guides—the UTA has long been at the forefront of advocacy and sustainable growth. Its president, Mrs. Yogi Biriggwa, has consistently engaged with government leaders on critical issues such as taxation reforms, infrastructure development, and sector competitiveness.
Tourism remains a cornerstone of Uganda’s economy, contributing significantly to foreign exchange earnings and employment. Officials say the rebranding will strengthen the association’s ability to influence policies and champion practices that help the sector achieve its full potential in line with the country’s national development agenda.
With its new identity, UTA has pledged to unify the industry’s diverse stakeholders and promote Uganda as a premier global travel destination.
