The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Deputy Resident Representative to Uganda, His Excellency Mr. Ian King has said UNDP is committed to supporting Uganda’s Development Agenda. He made the remarks during day three of Uganda’s Evaluation Conference 2024 at Uganda Management Institute (UMI) on Wednesday.
Mr. King said UNDP believes there is room for development in Uganda by 2030. He said monitoring and evaluation brings about accountability, compliance and enhances transparency in Government Ministries and Agencies.
“At UNDP we are committed to put in place interventions to address climate change, food security and learning resilience. We need to learn and adapt with climate change”, he said.
He said for Uganda to realize speedy economic growth, there is a need to incorporate evaluation in development and informed decisions.
“UNDP remains committed to supporting Uganda towards more resilience and towards climate change”, he added.
Justine Kasule Lumumba, the Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister, reiterated her early stance for Ugandans to plant more trees as a measure to curb environmental degradation and guarantee a safe habitat for present and future generations. She said Ugandans should strive to support the transformation of young people, support wealth creation and inclusive growth to make sure everyone has an income at household level.
“In addition, you should support Pan-Africanism, Patriotism and accelerate efforts to address climate change challenges”, she added.
Joseph Muvawala, the Executive Director, National Planning Authority (NPA), said the essence of accountability in development remains the same regardless of how we define it.
“It’s about being answerable to those we serve-the communities, the citizens and the future generations whose lives depend on the decisions we make today”, he said.
He said accountability is about setting clear goals and targets, being responsible for delivering on them and accepting potential sanctions for lack of compliance with commitments.
“Accountability ensures that those who hold power are answerable to those they serve, that commitments are honored, and that when failures occur, there are mechanisms to correct course”, he added.
