Since the 2018/2019 season climaxed with Betway Kobs winning the Roke 7s Series last month, different clubs have made effort to beef up roasters before the Uganda Cup kicks off on October 26.
The speculation has seen players like Asuman Mugerwa ,Daudi Semwami and a host of others linked to Kobs, Hima Heathens seem to have tied down Scot Olouch, Innocent Gwokto, Aaron Ofoyrwoth while Joseph Oyet remains linked to them. Stanbic Black Pirates have landed wing Michael Amollo and could add more names before the deadline on October 25. Perhaps the biggest hearsay is that of Rimula Rhinos going after Kabras’ Phillip Wokorach.
While all that talk is going on, the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) secretariat is yet to confirm any transfer with no paperwork yet to be processed. “There might be all these speculations but no transfer has been finalized as no forms have been filled and handed in. Maybe clubs want to do all their business and hand in at once,” said URU’s Robert Bwali.
Uganda Cup, first showpiece of the season will have its draw of October 11 at the union offices. Last year’s top eight sides Kobs, Pirates, Heathens, Buffaloes, Mongers, Warriors, Rhinos and Rams are to be drawn against and visit the last eight in Hippos, Impis, Stallions, Mbale, Kyambogo University, Soroti Rangers and Busitema University on the opening day of the competition.
Sides have already cut their off season short with training resuming in all camps. The focus will be on holders Kobs and former winners Heathens and Pirates. Heathens are the most successful side in the competition with 11 cups with Kobs in second at seven while the Sea Robbers have only won it twice in 2007 and 2017.
