Entebbe Airport Welcomes New Fire Trucks to Boost Aviation Safety

The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has commissioned two new, state-of-the-art fire trucks at Entebbe International Airport to enhance aviation safety. The event was presided over by the Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, and other key officials yesterday, Wednesday, October 22, 2024.

The new fire trucks, known as Tango 21 and Tango 22, have advanced features that make them crucial in maintaining the airport’s safety standards. Tango 21 can carry 12,500 liters of water and 1,500 liters of foam, while Tango 22 holds 10,500 liters of water. Both trucks are equipped with high-reach extendable turrets, which are capable of piercing an aircraft’s body in case of an emergency.

The acquisition of these trucks ensures Entebbe Airport can maintain its International Fire Category 9 status. Regulations require the airport to have 24,300 liters of water on standby, and with the new trucks providing a combined capacity of 23,000 liters, the airport is now well-prepared for any potential incidents. This comes as the airport undergoes continuous audits to maintain compliance with international safety standards.

The Director General of UCAA, Mr. Fred Bamwesigye, also highlighted the rigorous training that 72 staff members underwent to operate and maintain the new fire trucks. This investment in training and modern equipment comes at a time when Uganda’s aviation industry is growing rapidly, with increasing aircraft movements and passenger numbers.

Additionally, UCAA has been steadily upgrading its firefighting and rescue capabilities, having previously acquired firefighting boats and other essential equipment.

The minister praised UCAA’s efforts and congratulated the team on the milestone, emphasizing the importance of maintaining safety as air traffic increases. The airport is also seeing progress in the ongoing expansion project, with the new terminal building expected to be completed by the end of this year.

This new development is seen as a significant achievement for Uganda’s aviation industry, boosting both safety and operational standards at Entebbe International Airport.
