ON a sad note, a 19 year old youth identified as Aramazan Lutalo of Kyamagwa Cell in Mafubira, Northern Division in Jinja City died after he was attacked by machete-wielding men.

The youthful Lutalo died from Nick Clinic in Mpumudde where he was rushed after the unfortunate incident.

It’s a tragedy to the family and community for the life of the young man to be cut short by senseless thugs when he could have contributed to the socio-economic transformation of the nation.

The incident happened in the wee hours of Thursday when three men aboard a numberless motorcycle raided the area where they also inflicted heavy injuries on 60 year old Stephen Kalulu and Muzamiru Tenywa.

Muzamiru Tenywa, who sustained serious injuries on the head and a ruptured left eye, has been admitted at the Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for proper management with the hope of saving his life.

The other victim Stephen Kalulu was rushed to Glenz Dignity Hospital(formerly known as Almeca) where medics say he is out of danger and will be discharged in the next few days.

The culprits who are still at large also made off with cellular phones and an unspecified amount of cash from their victims.

Two suspects including a bodaboda motorcycle rider Wilber Mayanja and a scrap dealer Morishid Waswa are in police custody for interrogation by detectives who want to extract more information.

The arrest was facilitated by the police sniffer dog that used its skills to lead detectives to two rented rooms belonging to Waswa and Mayanja.

A search conducted yielded the recovery of dangerous weapons and substances like machetts, hammers, scissors, marijuana and knives.

A motorcycle with registration number UED 157N was impounded pending a verification from URA to establish the true owner.

The landlady identified as Lukia Namakula was interrogated by detectives at Mafubira Police Station on the same matter.

As a counter measure, the police and sister security agencies have adopted a Multisectoral Approach (MSA) with intensified joint security patrols (motorized and foot) as well as community sensitization programmes in black spot areas in Jinja City.

The Kiira Regional Police spokesperson SP James Mubi asks locals to cooperate by providing timely and relevant information for prompt intervention to eliminate criminal elements in the area.

A multisectoral approach is one in which multi-stakeholder engagement takes place and action is across different sectors. It’s regarded as an effective and inclusive approach to crime prevention.

The security committees in Jinja have in recent weeks expressed concern that the judiciary always releases bail suspects known as hardcore criminals who return and cause more pain to the community.

The judiciary hits back saying it’s a constitutional right of citizens to be granted bail, although it’s also disturbing to find dozens of petty offenders languishing in prison walls.
