The police have praised one of their own for using excessive force in order to quell a Forum for Democratic Change procession on November 4.
In a video that has since gone viral, the commander of Field Force Unit in Kampala Metropolitan Police, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rashid Agero, is seen smashing Dr Besigye’s wind shield using a gun butt before asking his juniors to spray pepper inside the retired Colonel’s car.
The four-time presidential aspirant is also hit by a high pressure water canon; nearly falling out of his car’s sunroof.
Besigye was later subdued, arrested and taken to Nagalama Police Station with his party saying they will not sit back as they are brutality mistreated.
“Police targeted and nearly killed our founding president Besigye while illegally and violently dispersing an FDC lawful and peaceful seminar. We had complied with all the legal requirements to host our seminar but in vain. This is not fair,” the party spokesman Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda said
Now the police have said Agero, who has had a history of violence will not be prosecuted because he was within the confines of the law and well streamlined in standards police operations procedures particularly when handling riotous crowds.
According to Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga, Besigye adamantly parked in the middle of road disrupting traffic flow, especially at Spear Motors junction.
Police say all engagements with Besigye hit a snag and available measures had to be used to clear the road to allow smooth movement of road users.
Other sources say Agero, who replaced Senior Superintendent of Police Sam Omala, who teroriesd the Opposition in 2015 before he was transferred to Greater Busoga as the Deputy Commander Bukedea Sector, is up for a promotion following his commendable job.
