As students at Makerere continue their strike over a 15 percent tuition increment, their counterparts at Nkumba University want their guild president, Byron Luswata Expedito impeached.
According to credible sources, Luswata, who was elected in April under the People Power movement umbrella, is accused of embezzling over Shs 50 million and incompetence.
He was on Monday peacefully escorted out of the university premises by students.
“He has been undermining the various cabinet ministers in the guild and wanting to do things on his own. The budget money that was allocated to the various ministers to do their work, he would interfere and want to be part of every transaction,” online publication Campus Bee states.
It is also alleged that he appointed his lover known as Agnes Atim, as Finance Minister.
“And together, embezzled guild funds meant for activities such as the bazaar,” the source adds.
“She failed to present clear accountability and above all appeared arrogant and disrespected the student’s Parliament. They couldn’t take it anymore and impeached her. Now they’re coming for the lover.”
The students also accuse him of betraying the ‘student cause’ after he signed into operation a policy to ensure that every student possesses an ‘authority card’ in order to be able to access university premises. Apparently, all the previous guild presidents had refused to sign it into operation but Luswata signed it and it took effect on October 22.
“Since yesterday, we don’t know where the guild ran to because students told him not step back to the campus.”
