Lecturers at public universities under their body umbrella Forum for Academic Staff of Public Universities in Uganda (FASPU) have vowed not to teach the coming semester if their salaries are not increased as promised by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni

Speaking in the press briefing that took place at Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Dr Grace Lubaale the FASPU chairperson informed the media that the president promised to increase their salaries but the pledge has never been implemented up to date.

Lubaale went ahead to refer to the letter that was dated on the 26th of April 2017,where David Bahati ,the minister of state for economic planning communicated that the agreement had been reached at a meeting between the inter-Ministerial Committee and FASPU that the balance salary that was enhanced for the financial year 2017/18 which amounted to Shs58.8 billion as arrears would be catered for together with the expected installment of Shs50 billion in the financial year 2018/19 to total to shs108.8 billion, something that has not happened.

On this note, the FASPU members unanimously resolved that unless the commitments are included in the budget framework paper for the financial year 2018/19, and paid by July 2018, all staff in public universities shall withdraw their labor.
