Last week Uganda hosted Solidarity Summit on Refugees to find ways on how to cater for refugees in Africa, particularly in Uganda.

During the summit European Union (EU) and its member states pledged $290,300,000 in solidarity with Uganda which facilitates more than 1million refugees.

Other non-EU members pledged $64,050,000 which in total makes $354,350,000.

According to EU, more than 65 million people around the world have been forced from home. Uganda is one of the countries welcoming refugees. Since mid- 2016 the population of refugees in Uganda has more than doubled to over 1.2 million.

EU called upon all non-traditional donors to join the struggle of pledging for refugees in Uganda.

Meanwhile, EU condemns war in South Sudan and urges that it must stop.

“Standing by Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the EU went on to condemn “in the strongest terms violence and armed conflict that continues to be perpetrated by government forces as well as all other armed groups in South Sudan, targeting defenceless civilians and causing huge loss of lives, destruction of property, and uprooting millions of South Sudanese from their homes to take refuge in the neighbouring states or suffer as internally displaces persons within their country,”
