Today Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) Chief of Defense Forces General David Muhoozi has met with Human Rights Watch Associate Director Maria Burnet to discuss on the torture allegations imposed on Uganda’s security forces.
In a meeting, Burnet commended the positive engagement with UPDF. However, she urged security operatives to put a halt on the ever rising torture of suspects in the country.
The meeting comes at the moment when Uganda Police Force is at spotlight after allegedly torturing former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi murder suspects.
Yesterday, Uganda Human Rights Commission released a report ranking Uganda Police Force, Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) and Uganda Prisons Services as top torture perpetrators.
According to the report, police accounts for 255 complaints of torture recorded by the Human Rights Commission during the survey year of 2016.
40 cases of torture were recorded to have been perpetrated by national army the UPDF and 25 by Uganda Prisons Services.
The Uganda Human Rights Commission report indicates extraction of confessions and also a need to obtain information as the reason behind torture especially by security agencies.
