Having many people suffered from electric and telecommunication poles accidents the government has introduced technology that will help to control or ease these accidents.

The British company held a demonstration of the new technology at the head offices of the Rural Electrification Agency in kololo, Kampala last week.

Electrical and telecommunication poles have often posed a threat to people and their properties whenever they suffer a decay, termite bites and even heavy rains.

The new pole technology will avoid the poles from decaying which will prevent them from falling on people, vehicles, safety hazards, power interruptions and even expand the life span of poles.

Godfrey Turyahikayo, the executive director of rural electrification agency said that the country has always had to replace utility poles every after two years which used to create unnecessary costs for the government.

Turyahikayo said that the new technology involves putting sleeves on the top and bottom of the poles whereby the sleeves prevent fires and the cap placed on the top of the pole prevents water and moisture penetration.

“If the polesaver can increase the life of the pole beyond twenty years then it saves money,” Turyahikayo said.

Turyahikayo added that all government offices including the Uganda national bureau of standards are going to study the new technology for two years.

“it has worked in other countries in Europe and Africa, they are good and we will work out the standards to use them here,” Turyahikayo added.

Peter Williams, the global sales and marketing director Pole Saver Europe Ltd, the company making the poles under the brand name Polesaver said the Polesaver was developed in the 1990s in UK and was used by farmers to protect their poles and the railway industry to protect their posts.
