Kawempe Councilors task government to ban tobacco products in Uganda

Councilors from Kawempe have come out with a sharp voice against tobacco in Uganda.

These headed by Kawempe North Lord Councilor Ssegirinya Muhammad have requested the government to immediately close all companies that produce tobacco products.

This happened this morning on streets of Kalerwe where the councilors in conjunction with Uganda National Health Users/consumers Organization (UNHCO) educated the masses about the dangers of Tobacco.

“Companies that produce cigarettes should be closed.” Said Segirinya.

He added that even cigarettes should be raised from Ugx 200 to ugx5000 in order to reduce the consumption rate.

Taibita Moses, the legal officer of UNHCO said that smoking causes about 87% of all cases of lung cancer.

“Smokers are 10 times more likely to get cancer than non smokers” said Taibita.

Currently,Tobacco is the leading preventable risk factor for all non communicable diseases.
