Dfcu turns heat on 19 Twitter influencers, wants identities revealed

The management of the embattled dfcu bank has asked social media giant, Twitter to reveal identities of 19 influencers whom it accuses of spearheading a negative campaign against the commercial bank.

The influencers have been allegedly tweeting confidential information about the dealings that led to the acquisition of Crane Bank.

In October 2016, Bank of Uganda took over Crane Bank on grounds of undercapitalization, placed it under receivership. The second biggest commercial Bank at the time was later in January 2017 sold to dfcu Bank, a transaction that has been in the public eye ever since given the twists and turns including court cases, Parliament probe etc that emerged after the dfcu took over Crane bank.

Recently dfcu wrote to Bank of Uganda stating that it was ready to return the controversial properties owned by tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia’s company, Meera Investments.

And social media influencers have feasted on the conflict.

It seems dfcu wants to control the social media buzz around it’s brand and it has gone to California, home state of Twitter, where it asked court to force Twitter to reveal identities of persons behind 19 handles.

In a subpoena making rounds on social media, dfcu lawyer Jeffrey S. Goodfried of Freeman and Smiley LLP ask Twitter to release details including full names and emails associated with the implicated Twitter Accounts, GPS locations, types of browsers used, operating systems, type of device, links to third party apps among many others that may help the bank reach the people behind the accounts.

However, twitter has not responded, instead it has asked its clients to advise if they intend to appear in this matter or file a motion to quash.

“Twitter has not disclosed any information regarding your account at this time. But please be advised that Twitter may be obligated to produce basic subscriber information related to your account in the future,” an email from Twitter reads in part.

“Accordingly, please advise within 20 days from the date of this notice (October 24th), from the email address associated with your Twitter account, if you intend to appear in this matter or file a motion to quash. Please also provide us with copies of any papers you file with the Court.”
